You’ve got to read Johnny Cash’s love letter to June Carter

Gemma and James wedding

Johnny Cash’s love letter to June Carter is in two words ‘bloody awesome.’ I’m not sure how considering that my husband is a huge Johnny Cash fan, I only got introduced to this reading this weekend gone, at a wedding! Oops.

Anyway, I know about it now, so that’s what’s important. And for those of you, who like me, had never come across it before, feast your eyes on it now.

Happy Birthday Princess,

We get old and get use to each other. We think alike.

We read each others minds. We know what the other wants without asking. Sometimes we irritate each other a little bit. Maybe sometimes take each other for granted.

But once in awhile, like today, I meditate on it and realize how lucky I am to share my life with the greatest woman I ever met. You still fascinate and inspire me.

You influence me for the better. You’re the object of my desire, the number one Earthly reason for my existence. I love you very much.

Happy Birthday Princess.

John

I told you so, right? Bloody awesome.

Using it as a wedding reading

In terms of using this for a wedding redding, it ticks all the boxes for so many reasons. It’s a nice length, it’s easy to read, and it’s quite a unique piece of text to have as a wedding reading (I think).

For what my two pence is worth, I think if you wanted to, you could introduce it like this ,’An extract of a letter written by Johnny Cash to his wife June Carter,’ and have a retracted text that misses out the greetings. So it reads like this,

We get old and get use to each other. We think alike.

We read each others minds. We know what the other wants without asking. Sometimes we irritate each other a little bit. Maybe sometimes take each other for granted.

But once in a while, like today, I meditate on it and realize how lucky I am to share my life with the greatest woman I ever met. You still fascinate and inspire me.

You influence me for the better. You’re the object of my desire, the number one Earthly reason for my existence. I love you very much.

There is no right or wrong about whether to have the full text or the extract, but if it were me, I think I’d prefer the extract, so that the texts sounds more generic rather that about two specific people, but that’s just me.

I also love that this reading is a real piece of text written by a someone in love, to the love of the love of their life, as opposed to a piece of text which has been written for art or for literary appreciation. And the fact that Johnny Cash and June Carter were well known for their very solid relationship, a relationship which was far from perfect and had its ups and downs and many many challenges, but which saw them married for over 35 years and together for much longer! So that kinda makes me warm inside knowing how much those words really mean.

I really can’t think of any reasons why this wouldn’t make an amazing wedding reading, or even a lovely printed quote in a frame. I love quotes in frames. Who doesn’t love quotes in frames?

And by the way, if you don’t know who Johnny Cash is, please slap yourself on the wrist and then get Googling. Thank you very much.
